Over 80% of car owners are fearful that they are being overcharged by their mechanics. Sounds familiar? Here are a few pointers for you.
Get to Know Your Car
Whether you are about to go into a scheduled service or taking it for a repair, knowing your car inside out will be a huge help. This is because a mechanic looks up to you to understand the issue and fix the related auto part. If you cannot convey exactly what is happening and when, they may venture into a costly diagnostic digging a hole in your pocket.
Our advice is to listen to your car and make note of any smoke, noises or rattles in the engine and write down when it happens i.e. when you start her up), what you were doing (i.e. turning a corner or braking), how often does the problem occurs and when the problem started.
Care your Car Between Servicing
Learn to perform some basic maintenance routines like checking the oil, coolant tyres. This will make you more informed about your car, giving you more confidence while explaining the issue to your mechanic. Also, you will be having fewer in-between visits.
Find a Trustworthy Mechanic
Look around when you visit your mechanic if the workshop is kept in a clutter free environ so that they can service and repair quickly. If the garage is strewn with tools and half-paired cars this might be a sign of confusion and lack of experience.
Also, listen to how the person is answering to your question. Is he answering in a professional and forthcoming manner? Are they giving you an itemised quote with clear explanations? If the answer is negative this is a red flag. You may nag him with your questions until you are satisfied and never commit to anything unless you fully understand the issue. There are instances where mechanics have charged for ghost repairs and parts. So, ask them if they can show you the damage or take away the replaced spare part.
